“We have to pause this moment in human history and ask ourselves how we’re taking care of women’s health? Around menopause, we have a cultural acceptance of women suffering. And what we’re doing as women is we are internalising that; we are creating more guilt, more shame, because we are not thriving in this patriarchal health care system. And we have to stop trying to do everything, from how we eat to how we workout to the medications we take, in the same way as men, because we are massively different. And we’ve been taught to do it the same way as men, and that is what needs to stop in order for us to thrive.”
Dr Mindy Pelz, author of Fast Like a Girl, Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s Podcast March 8th 2023.
This podcast is worth a listen. For me, it felt like one of those magical moments in life when you recognise we are in the midst of really good change – a point in time that marks a shift towards us better honouring women’s cycles and respecting women’s bodies.
As a women’s health acupuncturist, knowing where in their cycle women and girls are is essential. This is how I work, completely linked up to and in tune with hormones; so my better understanding how to support my treatments with food, intermittent fasting, rest and exercise is exciting – and sits so brilliantly alongside acupuncture’s perspective, adding weight and understanding to ancient wisdom.
I am still guiding women to focus on foods, flavours and cooking techniques that best suit them based on their bespoke treatment plan, but now I am doing that with more nuance. I am looking at how we create an ebb and flow of nutrients across a cycle and am loving how it resonates with my patients.
